SoSadlyFucked … A History of Grunge Romantica

The musical project known as SO SADLY FUCKED started out in 1996 from the demise of the portland punk band PUSHOVER… Brian would just sit in the fire escape out his window with his talking cat and play sad songs for the happy people below. And sometimes blow thousands of bubbles to fill the intersection of 28th/Glisan NE… He needed a band again and after a brief stint as AIRPORT DREAMS with Tony Gonzalez (Ashcan, Bathtub Full of Sharks) and Zack Wentz (the Dabbers), a minor miracle popped out of the bubbles. Brian and Pushover’s original bass player Kimi B. starting working on a new band. Tony G. took over kit duty and SO SADLY FUCKED was born.

In the summer of 2000 Brian Dead, along with Kimi B. & Tony G., went into Jackpot Studios  with Larry Crane to record “Self-Titled Debut CD”. This recording later became the first installment of So Sadly Fucked.  Also later, Brian would regret the “mock” album title, which he thought hilarious at the time…

Meanwhile, way out in the O of hiO… that would be dead center in the state if Ohio… RyanG had no idea of this BrianK or his BK ways. Ryan lived life as any normal middle-class suburban teen does… with a little mischief, a good dose of stupidity, and a ton of music. Ryan found that music spoke to him like no other human creation, and he spent many years exploring as much as he could about music. Although Ryan had no real plan for this exploration, he knew it would all mean something to him one day. So he pacified time and toiled on as if it was his duty. Ryan knew there was a plan for something better, he just didn’t know what yet…. so Ryan toiled away.

In 2001, months after the  splendid addition of Leah P. Murphy on keyboards, SSF took a well deserved band break after 5 years of underground struggle. That’s a polite way of saying they broke-up after arguing over an wheather to appear on a radio show or not…  The band had played many gigs around Portland with bands like Sidecar, Salt, Local H, Kayo, Track Star, Tina Age 13, Kill Me Tomorrow, Satan’s Pilgrims, Stuntman and Slackjaw. And palyed many clubs that meant something special to the rock scene of the Portland 90’s; thee O-Hell, EJ’s, Satyricon, Stage Four and even Umbra Penumbra.  Good times. And sad times… But mostly rockin’ times.

Around about mid-2007 RyanG had bought himself a one-way ticket to Portland, OR and started working towards that “plan” he had. Shortly after his move he started working for an indie music company. Then in late 2007, BrianK also satrted working at said indie music company.

In 2008 BrianK released the first installment of So Sadly Fucked on CD BABY.  Then sometime in the Fall of 2008 Ryan and Brian decided to get together to play some music, and sometime shortly thereafter they evolved into So Sadly Fucked.

After a brief 3 city tour as a duo  in April 2009 (with Coolzey and Sticks Downey), SSF once again became fortunate enough to have Kimi B back on the low end. Like a howl answered in the night, Joey Prude (Slackjaw) appeared like magic on the drum throne one fine day in August 2009. And for the first time in almost ten years SO SADLY FUCKED is loud. Worth the wait, I’d say. Let’s hope the fire grows and continues to burn as long as the forrest needs cleaning and the ghosts need lightning!

And so it is, as it seemed destined to be, that We Are SoSadlyFucked.
